St Conan's Kirk

St Conan's Kirk is situated in Loch Awe village, Scotland. It was voted as one of the Top Ten Scottish Buildings of the last century during 2016 Architects Royal Incorporation.

In 1886, St Conan's Kirk was initially erected by Douglas Walter Campbell since his mother found the distance to the local church too tiring. Being a talented wood-carver and architect, Douglas focused his energy to devise an alluring structure for his mother. Most of the church's details are bestowed for his family and the local community.

The structure features the Celtic cross, art carvings, the Saxon tower, Norman entrance, stone circle and ten gothic flying buttresses. Walter commissioned the finest artists to decorate the building's interior.

St Conan's Kirk is exceptional in surroundings and style, oozing a strong aura of peace and spirituality. Although it's Argyll's most popular tourist attraction, Kirk's incredible size means there are times when you may feel that the place is all yours.

The church's windows will instantly capture your attention as you enter. During sunny days, light illuminates the interior with its golden glow.

The current structure as it stands was constantly upgraded up to 1914 when Campbell Walter died. However, his sister continued improving the structure until her demise in 1927.

Currently, Kirk is under a trust that seeks to maintain the structure to its full glory.

The Kirk sits near the Ben Cruachan dam, and there's a Ben Cruachan tourist centre down the road if you intend to explore deep into The Hollow Mountain'.

As you peek towards the core of the loch, you can make out the Innisschonain and Innishail islands.
